Leaked BlackBerry Application Suite Professional for Windows Mobile
We told you about BlackBerry Application Suite (BAS) Professional back in the day when we first got a copy of the application. Now the crack team at the XDA-DEV forums (via BBLeaks) have scored a copy that anybody can download. Thanks to Wakady for putting it out there.
In case you don’t remember BAS lets you run a virtual BlackBerry OS (4.5 if I remember correctly) on Windows Mobile devices. There do seem to be a few caveats the first being that it looks like this version requires a BES server to work. If I remember correctly BAS was supposed to come out in Professional and Personal version one for BES and one for BIS. Right now only the Professional/BES version has leaked.
Wakady also notes that he installed it on TAEL ROM Standard WM 6.5.1 & runs fine. He could not get past the registration screen without a BES connection.
Anybody with a Windows Mobile device want to give it a spin? You can find it at Mediafire at this link.

Craigslist App By Movela Pyxis Mobile Now On App World
Back in November we told you that Movela Pyxis Mobile was working on an official Craigslist Application for the BlackBerry. They were working on getting it on App World last time we heard from them but looks like it is finally available. The developers & Joseph let us know that the app is now available at this link http://appworld.blackberry.com/webstore/content/4236 . The application will cost $4.99 on the BB App World.
I had the chance to beta test this application and have been using it for the last few months which I am impressed with how fast and slick the application is. With this application you can bookmark your searches, search by category, set your location same as you would on the Craigslist website. The application allows you to see pictures if they are available or send a listing to a friend as well as reply to a seller right from your BlackBerry. The response time while searching is fast you can also save your searches if you tend to search for the same keyword often.
Here is a description from the developers:
craigslist mobile by Movela is a full featured client application for BlackBerry® devices that allows users to browse and search craigslist postings, bookmark and reply to posts, save searches and more. Supports all categories and all countries supported by the www.craigslist.org website. craigslist mobile by Movela is the official craigslist application for BlackBerry devices.

Sidebar wants to bring free content to you
It took me a while to understand what this Sidebar application is about, but eventually it became clear: Sidebar is a push application that recommends content to you on your BlackBerry. Or, in their own words…
Sidebar is a personal content recommendation and delivery engine. In short, we find the fun stuff (videos, apps, games, podcasts, photos, news updates, interviews, chances to win great prizes, jokes, music, sports, fashion advice, etc.) in the mobile world and make it easy for you to discover, access, and share. New content arrives daily. We’ll let you know when it does so you don’t miss out on anything. The more you use Sidebar, the better we get at picking stuff you like.
I haven’t tested it yet, but the rest of the description makes it sound a lot like Last.fm: they throw at you something they think you are going to like, and you indicate whether you like it or not. The more you use it, the more the software “learns” what you like and adjusts the pushed content accordingly.
I have mixed feelings about that. The first time I used Last.fm, right after it was made available, I was impressed at how fast it learned my taste and actually succeeded at playing songs that I liked more than 95% of the time. Unfortunately, that apparent accomplishment wore off pretty quickly. The selection became quite restricted, repetitive, obvious. Instead of pleasing me, the thing was really boring me.
This is not Last.fm though. I haven’t even used Last.fm in a very long time, to be honest about it. Maybe they have improved their system, and maybe Sidebar has a much better system. You be the judge.
Getting the software isn’t very easy. They have this annoying system that only sends you a link by SMS. In other words, only U.S. carriers are welcome. Why they can’t just provide a clear link for people to download and install the app is beyond me. But then I found out it is possible to install the app from this link with the BlackBerry browser. But it has to be in the BlackBerry mode, not Firefox or Internet Explorer. I was able to download and install using that approach, but the application didn’t work for me.
Let me know if you have better luck. Also, I recommend reading their FAQ. They can be interesting. Most notably, they state that the application and service are free, the content is paid by sponsors. I am afraid that could limit the content, but only a hands-on experience will tell. Like I said, the application didn’t work for me. You may also want to read this press release.

Browse forums on your BlackBerry with BerryBlab
Forums are great source of technical help or general knowledge. You can learn a lot reading forums, no matter what topic. But reading forums on a BlackBerry is often not a pleasant experience. Forums are most definitely not designed for small screens. Some forums have “mobile” versions, but those are rarely good.
The Generation Media Group knows that and has just introduced BerryBlab. BerryBlab lets you use vBulletin forums on a BlackBerry without using the Web browser. It’s a vBulletin assistant application. The free version lets you access multiple forums, view the threads and posts and read your private messages. If you buy the Premium version, you can also subscribe or unsubscribe to threads, reply to posts, reply to private messages and view images.
Sadly, not all forums run on vBulletin, so the usefulness of BerryBlab is somewhat limited. Also, the forum has to install a plugin, which means that not even all vBulletin forums will work. Having said that, I suggest checking their Web site and also the screenshots.

Backup SMS To Email Free with SMS Backups
Briam from Mobilearchiving let us know that they just released a free application called SMS Backups. The application allows you to back up your entire SMS conversation including incoming and outgoing messages with contact name and number. You can pick up a free copy of the application by going to smsbackups.com .
Description from the developers:
The app is called SMS Backups and it forwards SMS text messages to email such as Gmail, an Exchange account, etc. The great advantage of doing so is that you’ve got a backup of your SMS text messages, and its easy to search SMS in Gmail or Outlook!
SMS Backups is pretty unique. Although there are a couple of other applications which forward sms to email they:
1) only forward incoming text messages. SMS Backups forwards both incoming and outgoing SMS text messages – so you get a backup of the whole chats you had with people, not just the received messages
2) SMS Backups lets you add labels to the email copy so its easy to file into the appropriate folder via Outlook’s rules, Gmail filters etc
3) the other apps only put in the mobile number in the email – but who remember numbers? SMS Backups adds the contact info to the email subject so you have both the number and the contact’s name making it easy to search for and filter SMS text messages.
You can find the SMS Backups at smsbackups.com – it’s a free download. Runs on all Blackberrys running OS 4.2 and later.

Oratio: screen reader for the visually impaired
Try using your dear BlackBerry with your eyes closed for a minute and realize how utterly impossible that is. Well, you can probably listen to music and place phone calls, but that’s about it.
We just take our eyesight for granted all the time, and completely forget about all the people who don’t have it. How do they use their cell phones? I suppose placing calls is easy after you get the hang of it, but I really can’t imagine a blind person enjoying all the text-based benefits we enjoy every day. Not without some kind of special aid…
Canadian company Humanware is specialized in helping people with disabilities and has introduced a screen reader for BlackBerry users. It has a pretty good list of features according to the product page:
- Manage instant messaging, emails, SMS and MMS.
- Make and receive calls with access to caller ID on incoming calls.
- Manage contact list.
- Manage your call log.
- Schedule appointments and tasks with alarms and reminders.
- Access to the phone’s settings, ring tones and speed dials.
- Intuitive and familiar audio user interface.
- Easy-to-use customization options for frequently used settings.
- Auto start mode when the device turns on.
- Different verbosity levels to allow users to define the amount of information provided.
- Settings control over the voice rate and pitch.
- Keyboard echo settings for text entry.
- Easy-to-use command structure.
The only bad news is that it is only available for the BlackBerry Curve 8520 from AT&T. Being visually impaired is not difficult enough, you’ll also have to deal with AT&T… I really hope they bring that remarkable product to other carriers and BlackBerry models. Actually, I think this is the kind of thing that should be built-in on every device. RIM, buy their product and make it a stock feature. It is a very, very good idea.

Tips: BlackBerry Messenger best practices
The BlackBerry Messenger is a remarkable tool. But not only does it have software glitches, it is also a social connectivity tool, and as such it has its socially related pitfalls because you’re not just dealing with a piece of software, you’re also dealing with people. If you just started using it, there are problems you should probably be careful about.
Al Sacco, one of my favorite writers on all things related to the BlackBerry, is very aware of those pitfalls and decided to share his wisdom with his readers. He wrote about six tips for making the best use of the BlackBerry Messenger. I suspect it won’t be very interesting for experienced BBM blabbermouths (blabberfingers?), but it’s definitely a must read for BlackBerry novices. Check it out!

Rant! BlackBerry blog has new, lame design
I didn’t even know there was an “Official BlackBerry Blog.” I should have known. A friendly reader just told me that the “Official BlackBerry Blog” has a new design. It’s the beautiful thing you can see above. Ain’t that pretty? I like it. But wait…
Well, I liked it until I decided to check it on my BlackBerry. That didn’t go well because, like I mentioned yesterday, I always have my BlackBerry set on Firefox mode so I can check all sites’ full version, not their mobile version. I do that because many sites insist on pushing an incomplete “mobile” version. Well, that beautiful screenshot above is obviously taken with a BlackBerry browser set on BlackBerry mode. Look what happens when I tried to view it in my usual Firefox mode:
Yikes! The black text bleeds into a black background and is pretty much unreadable. Do you know what that means? I know what that means. That means THEY DIDN’T TEST IT.
This topic actually raises much deeper concerns than just a poorly developed Web page design. It reeks of a problem I have detected in a long time: a blatant lack of “dogfooding” at RIM. You know, when software developers eat their own dog food. Sometimes it really doesn’t look like that is happening at RIM.
If you do the test yourself, you will see that the blog page is considerably longer/bigger in Firefox mode. It’s more “complete.” In BlackBerry mode, it’s a lot shorter. I didn’t check whether any content is missing or it has just been broken into smaller pieces, but in either case my question is: WHY???!!! Are they telling us that the BlackBerry browser can’t digest and display long pages? Are they admitting defeat? Why would they do that, that is not really true — although the BlackBerry browser does choke on a few long pages once in a while. The BlackBerry browser can handle that full page pretty well. And this has nothing to do with saving bandwidth either. We all have unlimited BIS/BES packages, we can browse to our hearts’ content without incurring overage fees, so that’s no excuse. What were they thinking? I suspect they were not thinking at all. It just didn’t occur to them that the browser has other emulation modes and that some users might, well, you know, use them. So it only looks good in “mobile” mode. In full mode, it looks bad. Who is responsible for their Web design?
I am 100% sure many readers will be encouraged to say it’s not the page, it’s the browser. Yes, I’ve had that problem all the time since I moved from OS 4.5 to OS 4.6. But I won’t discuss the BlackBerry browser problem. That’s something I’ve been avoiding because the list of problems would be ridiculously long, the article would turn out to be more like a book. But I can sum up all the problems we have with the BlackBerry browser in one single sentence: RIM staff themselves don’t use it. Here is my pet peeve with the BlackBerry browser:
Is it a coincidence that RIM is not even mentioned as one of the “major players in the phone space” in the article above? I often have difficulty reading Web sites on my BlackBerry because of that ridiculous line height. Why are those lines so crammed one onto another? The real questions are: how did that get past Quality Control? Does anyone at RIM actually use the BlackBerry browser? Didn’t anyone at RIM realize this problem and say “Hey, this sucks, let’s fix it”? That is the summary of all the BlackBerry browser problems.
And here is one more example: a message I got from the BlackBerry “Owners’ Lounge.” Any BerryReview reader is excused for not knowing that there is a “BlackBerry Owners’ Lounge.” It’s useless most of the time. There have been complains about that and they improved it, they now send us tips that aren’t usually very interesting, but they do. Since I am in Brazil, they didn’t ask me what language I prefer, they just sent me the message in Portuguese. Look at the result:
It’s a pretty long message, I had to request “More” several times, and it’s all garbled like that.
I’ll explain in case you don’t get it. Portuguese is a language full of accented charactes, like à, é, ô, and cedillas (ç). That text above should have read like this:
Conexão BlackBerry
Edição latino-americana
Prezado Luciano,
Você encontrará nesta edição:
- Mais dicas, truques e atalhos
But apparently RIM is unable to send me an e-mail message with the correct encoding. The message comes straight from RIM, it is displayed in my BlackBerry device and it looks all garbled. E-mail is the most prominent feature of the BlackBerry platform, how can that even happen?
I’ve told you what my guess is: they don’t test it. Worse: I’ll even venture say that many of them don’t actually use it. Maybe they carry iPhones, Nokias and HTCs around in their everyday life. That lack of careless oversight is something that makes the competition seem really attractive.

Bccthis: New Messaging Technology Set to Revolutionize Communications
This is a brand-new announcement, and I might as well ask our dear readership some much needed help so I can hopefully understand what the heck they are talking about. Here is the product’s page and here is the announcement. Now here come highlights that I selected:
“Bccthis, an innovative contextual messaging company which provides new modes of communication for email, micro-blogging and social networking services (…)
“Bccthis represents an evolution in the way we communicate. The technology extends capabilities and improves communication over digital media platforms by enabling a layer of added context to messaging services. (…) allows users to send secure private messages to selected recipients while simultaneously sending a message to a larger audience.“
Here comes my first issue with the concept: what is the point of sending secure private messages to selected recipients if you are simultaneously sending a message to a larger audience? Can someone explain?
“Each messaging platform works more or less the same way, requiring users to send the same message to each recipient, despite the level of information possessed by, or relationship to, each recipient. Bccthis allows people to manage this information and relationship disparity in a fresh and intuitive fashion.
“The Bccthis Outlook plug-in allows users to safely send personalized private messages to selected recipients in the To, Cc, or Bcc fields along with their original email.”
So they have patented a method for sending out copies of one given message to multiple recipients? Hasn’t good old e-mail been doing that since… ever?
“Bccth.is, a full-fledged Twitter client, provides an interface to send direct messages to specific recipients along with the original tweet.”
So it is a Twitter spamming broadcast tool?
“For email, Bccthis is a plug-in for the world’s most popular mail client, Microsoft Outlook, allowing users to send personalized notes to selected recipients in the To, Cc, or Bcc field. For Twitter, Bccth.is provides an interface and API to send a personalized direct message to selected recipients while tweeting to a broader group of followers.”
So, instead of relying on the long-established universal e-mail protocol, we are expected to install a Microsoft Outlook plug-in? What if I use Thunderbird? What if I use Eudora? What if I use Mutt? What if I use Mac or Linux? Are they going to make plug-ins for every e-mail client under the sun? I can’t see any advancement in this, just a big step back. It requires a plug-in that only works with one program. Maybe a couple more in the foreseeable future. What is the point?!
All I can see is that someone thought that a lot of people can’t decide whether to communicate over Twitter or e-mail, and thought that would be a good idea to put both communication systems into the same, erm… thing. Then they added some sort of broadcast features for good measure. Is this it? Do I get that right? What part of this promising, novel concept is going over my head?
Oh yeah, the BlackBerry angle: they have a BlackBerry client in the works. The specific page doesn’t explain anything, it just informs that the application is coming soon.
Let me nag you with this again: doesn’t the BlackBerry already let us add To, Cc and Bcc recipients already? How is this “new messaging technology set to revolutionize communications” anyway?
Sorry, Bccthis. I really don’t see it. I am just humble enough to admit it and I expect the BerryReview readers (or any of you guys) to enlighten me.

New App: Iconify 0.8.3, public BETA
After a while in closed beta, Iconify is finally released in public BETA.
Iconify is a brand new application brought to you by emacberry.com that, basically, lets you create an “Iconify Dial Link” to any contact of your BlackBerry address book directly on your Home screen. In fact, you can create Home screen icons/links for phone numbers, SMS, email addresses or even Web pages. That’s pretty much what it amounts to, but if you want a rather lenghty description of all the features – limitations and possibilities – be sure to check the application’s Web page: http://www.emacberry.com/iconify.html
Iconify should run on all BlackBerry devices with OS 4.3 or higher. It has been tested on the 8110, 8130, 8220, 8310, 8330, 8700, 8800, 8820, 8830, 8900, 9000, 9500, 9520, 9530, 9550, 9630 and 9700 models. If you don’t believe them, give it a try yourself. Here is the OTA link: http://www.emacberry.com/ota/Iconify.jad
Just go there and check the page, it seems that all questions are answered already. Even a handy online manual is provided. If you have a question that doesn’t seem to be answered, contact Matthias Marquardt, he sounds like a pretty nice guy. You can also post your questions right here on this page, in the comment section. I suspect that Matthias will be keeping an eye on it.
