Review: Blackberry HS-700 Wireless Headset
Rating: 9 out of 10 stars
Web Site: http://www.blackberry.com/hs700
Price: $129.99 (Sold at Blackberry Accessories Store and Best Buy Web Store)
Two weeks ago we have received the all new Blackberry HS-700 Wireless Headset from RIM for testing. I have spent the time testing the ins and outs of the unit. This lightweight bluetooth headset is a delight to use.
There some very cool features built into the headset. There is only a single visible button on it. This is used to issue voice commands. Unlike many other headsets, it doesn’t have volume or power buttons. You simply rotate the earpiece to turn it on or off. When a call comes in, you can simply say “answer” or “ignore”. Using the voice command button, you can also dial, mute, swap calls, redial and more. It is one of the few devices that you don’t have to wait for the voice prompt to complete. You can actually “barge” in, as Research in Motion calls it. So let’s say you have a call coming in. You don’t have to wait for the whole announcement to decide to answer or decline.
Once you turn on the unit first time, it guides you through the pairing process, which is very simple. Then you are good to go. Here is a brief features list:
Voice prompts: Once you’re connected, voice prompts alert you with battery status updates, mute status and more.
Built for your BlackBerry smartphone: Listen to audio files saved on your smartphone and get turn-by-turn directions from third-party GPS mapping apps.
Advanced noise-cancellation technology: Get clear conversations with noise-cancellation technology and dual microphones.
Automatic volume control: The headset adjusts the volume of your call as you accelerate onto a highway or in other noisy environments.
Sleek design: Get fit, comfort and style with metallic finishes, a leather face and carefully crafted ear gels and ear hooks.
This elegant headset is looking just like a Blackberry device, black leather, silver bezel. The package comes with 1 regular, 3 stabilizing and 1 cushioned ear gels, 2 ear hooks, micro-USB cable and a wall charger.
I am sure everyone will find a comfortable fitting. I preferred a stabilizing gel plus the hook. It fits comfortably in my both ears. After the device is paired, you will hear a connection confirmation if a connection was successfully made to your Blackberry. Also on the Blackberry itself, you’ll see the confirmation:
Even though it is a mono unit, it announces “stereo audio” profile and connects as such. One nifty feature is if you forget what commands to use, you can say “What can I say” and depending on your situation, it will tell you available commands (available commands change depending on whether you are listening to music or not). Some of you might be pondering how you control the volume. The trick is the headset has an automatic volume control. Via Blackberry’s volume controls, adjust the volume to your liking. From then on, when noise level around you changes, headset adjusts the volume and does a pretty darn good job. Interestingly, when playing music, you can issue “Volume up” or “Volume down”, but not any other time. It makes you wonder why.
The voice control can be tricky. I tried the unit under different conditions. On a quiet location, I had 100% accuracy, didn’t need to change my voice or raise it. However, while driving down the highway, I had troubles. The best way is to either increase your voice or speak slower. Funny enough, one time it refused to recognise “Play” while still driving down the highway (don’t worry, my wife was driving). So in a joking manner, I increased the pitch of my voice, sounding like a girl, and wouldn’t you know it, it worked. The trick for better accuracy is to speak slower, that really does help.
The comfort of the headset is great, you don’t even feel it is there. The battery life is 4 hours of talk time, personally tested. Around the time when 30 minutes of battery life was left, it started beeping once a minute or so to let me know it is running out of battery. However, at 20 minutes battery life left, it announced it is powering off. It turned out this was a defective unit, as normally around 20 minute mark it should announce low battery but still continue to work. RIM was quick to replace my test unit. All in all 4 hours of talk time is very good. HS-700 also supports pairing with two or more devices at the same time. So you can pair it with your computer as well, without worrying about re-pairing it with your Blackberry and use it for VOIP or other applications.
I also tested the unit with Garmin and Telmap. It is nice to have turn by turn directions in your ear, instead of announcing it to everyone in the car with you. Makes life easier. For those who are interested, below is the full specs of the HS-700:
Bluetooth:
- Bluetooth® 2.1 for simplified pairing
- Bluetooth® HFP and A2DP Bluetooth profile

- Audio streaming1
1. Requires BlackBerry® Device Software v6.0 or later
I have a 9700, running 5.0.0.743 and I was able to stream audio fine. Maybe some of this functionality is already built into 5.0 OS. On another note, according to the user guide, there will be firmware updates for the headset, so who knows what other features will be made available. According to RIM, they are trying to improve user safety and provide a better driving experience, without the need to touch your Blackberry while driving. Overall I love this headset, it is lightweight, elegant, easy to use and works great.
Pros:
- Lightweight
- Excellent battery life
- Stylish look
- Easy to use
Cons:
- Under noisy environments, it can be hard to use voice commands
- One time it caused a reset to my phone (could be an isolated issue, as it never happened again after that)

Senomix Brings Simple Timesheets To Your BlackBerry
Timesheets are one of those things that makes sense to mobilize onto BlackBerrys. There have been quite a few solutions for BlackBerry timesheets but the latest comes from Senomix. Their timesheets app works on Mac, Linux, and Windows PC’s along with a BlackBerry client.
Senomix Timesheets works with your companies QuickBooks, Peachtree, MYOB and other accounting software offering a desktop and mobile frontend for entering in time. Data is not stored on their servers so there is no monthly fee beyond the one time purchase price. They offer a free trial after which prices per user range from $84-$99 based on volume. They also offer a optional but recommended Upgrade Subscription for $20 per user per year to get the latest updates.
The BlackBerry app provides full weekly timesheets on the device with a built in automatic stopwatch and connectivity to windows and Mac OS X. You can simply select your projects and tasks and enter in a comment for every entry. This is a great solution for companies that already have some sort of backend accounting solution but are looking to mobilize or optimize entry.
You can find more details about the Senomix solution at www.senomix.com. The BlackBerry client is specifically covered on this page.

Don’t Accidentally Text Your Sheriff For Weed…
In another case of text messages gone awry we have a humorous story of a Helena, Montana teen accidentally texting the sheriff for Marijuana instead of his dealer. He sent the message to the wrong number and it ended up on the phone of Sheriff Leo Dutton:
Hey Dawg, do you have a $20 I can buy right now?
The sheriff thought it was odd and replied to the teen asking “How much we talking?” He then proceeded to setup a sting to catch the two buyers. When he identified himself as the sheriff they started falling apart. In an interesting form of justice the sheriff got the parents involved and let them mete out their own flavor of punishment. Cruel!
The lesson of this story is that next time…

deToday App Turns Any Theme into a Today Theme
BlackBerry users either love or hate today screens. Up until the Torch there were usually options for you to install a today theme on your BlackBerry to offer you a bit of insight into your day. With the Torch and its new drop down status bar RIM did not offer a today theme option. They have also not released the Theme Studio for BlackBerry 6 so designers cannot create a today theme yet.
That is where deToday steps in. This app from OdEve lets you pull your appointments right onto the homescreen background. You just choose the number of appointments you want to show and it will display them on the homescreen with your custom background image and colors. It also supports multiple calendars which is nice. They even integrate nicely with BerryWeather so that it is all displayed on the same background image. The only downside is that unlike normal today themes you cannot click on the item to open it up since it is just a background image.
DeToday is not a nice solution if you have been looking to add some today screen functionality to your homescreen. DeToday is available now in the store for $4.99 and offers a 15 day free trial for you to give it a spin before you buy.

Google Voice Now Offers Missed Call Notification Options
Google has been slowly rounding out the features in their Voice service. The latest update adds the ability to get missed call notifications which is essential for me. For example, I can be in the subway with no reception and get a missed call and no voicemail. Annoying way to miss a call and not know about it.
While cellphones suffer from the same issue Google has managed to do something about it for your Google Voice number. You can now choose to have missed calls show up in your Voice inbox. On top of that you can also have missed call notifications sent to you via email.
Nice going Google. Now if only we can get the ability to port your number… I just made sure to leave that suggestion in their survey at this link.

RIM Applies for Patent on Improved Billboard Advertisements…
Here is another head scratcher from RIM’s patent department. They applied for two patents titled an “Adaptive roadside billboard system and related methods” and “Adaptive pedestrian billboard system and related methods.” These two patents relate to using congestion information to make roadside and curbside advertisements more productive.
For example, on a crowded street in NYC with lots of foot traffic at lunch the adds would show simpler messages. When things quiet down they would offer more complex information and details. The inverse is true for the roadside billboard system where the faster traffic is moving they will show simpler information since drivers don’t have as much time to process the advertisement.
So we just have one question. When did RIM start getting involved in advertising billboards? I know they have been buying up ad space like crazy to feature BBM but it might be a bit overboard for a smartphone company to patent a better ad delivery method…

OGG Vorbis and FLAC Codecs Supported on BlackBerry Torch 9800 and Curve 9300
This came out of left field! While writing a FAQ article about supported media types for your BlackBerry I ran into an interesting little update. Turns out that RIM stuck in support for the enthusiast Vorbis codec and FLAC coded in the BlackBerry Torch 9800. The also put it in the BlackBerry Curve 9300 but not the Pearl 9100 which is odd… I guess support has nothing to do with BlackBerry 6 because the 9300 does not ship with BlackBerry 6.
I tried an Vorbis audio file on my BlackBerry Torch 9800 and it worked like a charm. I then tested out a much larger FLAC file and it also worked. The only downside is that you cannot stream these formats using RTS but you can download them through the Torch’s browser. I can now play my collection of FLAC files on my Torch! I never even thought of trying…
In case you don’t know what Vorbis or FLAC is here is a bit of a intro:
- Vorbis (Wikipedia) is an open source codec kind of like MP3 (which has patents on it) which is used by open source projects as a royalty free replacement for MP3. Like MP3 files it is lossy so it does compress files and lose some quality but it does it very well. It is usually called OGG Vorbis because it is in an Ogg container (*.ogg file).
- The FLAC (wikipedia) codec is an open/free GPL licensed audio codec and audio file format (*.flac) for lossless audio conversion. That means it is a codec meant for when you don’t want to lose any audio quality in the conversion process. The downside is that these files tend to be MUCH larger but it is amazing for music that loses quality when compressed. On the other hand the format does usually manage a 60% compression from the original source without losing quality.
Anybody else excited that RIM has added FLAC and OGG Vorbis support? I know when they added DIVX and XVID support that went over well with users and I think this is also a very nice addition that RIM let fly under the radar.

Upgrading Your BlackBerry Operating System Walkthrough (Official Upgrades)
Since AT&T finally decided to release OS 5.0 for the Bold 9000 I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to test out RIM’s new and improved Desktop Manager 6.0 to upgrade my system. It comes with a completely revamped interface which is a vast improvement over prior versions. However, as with all new designs, we need to learn everything all over again including the dreaded OS upgrade.
Have no fear dear readers as I’m going to walk you through the new upgrade process. I completed the upgrade in less than fifteen minutes, but keep in mind it could take up to an hour depending on your applications and the size of your backup file.
Over the past couple of years I’ve done my fair share of OS upgrades, some using Desktop Manager, others using the Application Loader, and I’ve come up with some useful tips to help you:
- Remove the Micro SD card from the device.
- Backup all device data.
- Remove all non-compatible apps and themes. As all of my themes and apps were meant for OS 4.6, I performed a complete handheld wipe to remove them.
- BIS users will have to resend their service books (Setup/Personal Email Setup) and BES users will have to reactivate their phone with IT when the process is complete (if allowed).
- Keep all your activation codes and login information for your apps nearby.
Since DM 5.0, downloading and installing your carrier’s OS is no longer mandatory. When connected, DM will automatically detect your device, check for your carriers’ update, display all available versions offered by your carrier, and download the necessary files for you. I recommend that if you have a poor WiFi or internet connection to install the OS on your machine before loading DM. You can access your carriers download site here: http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp. You will need to download the OS’s .exe file, double click to start the process, and follow the instructions. When complete click on the DM icon on your desktop.
First, connect your phone to DM using the USB cable. When the dialog box appears that an update is available click on Get Update. If you accidentally click on Update Later, don’t worry. All you need to do is click on the Update my device button in the center next to the red asterisk, or from the drop down menu in the upper left under Device and you’re all set to go.
Next, an Update Options box gives you the choice to backup your device data and sign up for email notifications of new updates. When you have selected your options simply click on Install Update which will bring you to the final summary page and press Ok. This will begin the upgrade process and should take no more than one hour. A progress bar will track the different stages of installation from wiping to reconnecting to loading the applications. During this stage, my ADHD compelled me to get everything else done rather than stare at the screen. I managed to check my email, played a couple of games of Bejeweled Blitz, and even wrote parts of this walkthrough. I rather liked the fact I could multitask with the operation running in the background although I don’t recommend it. The only thing left to do is wait for the process to complete, unplug your phone, and enjoy your new operating system. There is a slight chance your personal preferences didn’t carry over, but I wouldn’t worry over that. Sound profiles, themes, wallpapers, and apps can all be retrieved and reset. Just don’t forget to put back your Micro SD card.
For those of you who want to downgrade your system the process is virtually the same with one exception. When you choose Update my device from the menu, you will be presented with an option that says View other versions. From here you can select which software version you want to install and proceed using the directions above.
So that’s all there is to it. Hopefully it wasn’t as frightening as you thought and you’ll all be ready for when BB6 is released.

BlackBerry App World Now Has 10,000+ Apps
As of writing this article App World now has 10,077+ BlackBerry applications listed. That is a pretty impressive number for RIM considering how many they had only a year or two ago. We mentioned back on August 26th that RIM was nearing the 10,000 app mark. In the 12 days since then they have added 189 apps which is an impressive ~16 apps a day. Nothing compared to the rate of other app stores which number in the tens of thousands but it means that RIM is finally starting to rally on the app front.
I am hoping RIM is going to release some tools at DevCon this month that will help get that number closer to 50,000 by this time next year. I totally realize that we need quality over quantity but options count for something. For example, I am REALLY missing a solid RSS reader on my Torch. Is there any reason why we cannot get something better than Social Feeds?

New iBerry Crossbar from BPlay
Many of you who have owned a BlackBerry for some time now remember one of the first theme designers out there, BPlay. Back in the day they created Crossbar which was a middle scrolling dock of icons. Now they’ve taken that design and combined it with their iBerry theme. It’s an interesting way to take the popular iPhone icons and integrate them in an efficient styled theme. I tested the 9700 version and it worked nicely for me with no real lag. iBerry Crossbar regularly sells for a pricey $6.99 but is on sale I’m told until Thursday for just $2.99 so definitely pick this theme up now if you’re at all interested. WordPress For BlackBerry v1.4.3 Fixes Photo Issue
The WordPress for BlackBerry team is really rolling out the minor bug fixes. Right on the heels of v1.4.2 we have v1.4.3 which according to their forums fixes a minor bug when uploading pictures.
Version 1.4.2 had a BlackBerry OS bug where if you tried to add a photo it would ask you if you wanted to take a picture or add it from the library. Even if you clicked the library option it would just take you back to the add photo option. RIM supposedly confirmed the issue and suggested a workaround for the WordPress team.
You can pick up the update if you have not been notified at this link or through app world at this link. Thanks Terrence for the tip!

BlackBerry Style 9670 OS Tutorial Videos Found Online
I am not sure how these got out but Bla1ze over @CrackBerry spotted some nice OS tutorial videos for the yet to be released or even announced BlackBerry 9670. The 9670 is rumored to be called the BlackBerry Style but sometimes RIM waits for the last minute on naming decision changes. Still its nice to see how this clamshell device will work. I am not the biggest fan of flip phones but I know there is a market for them. My problem is that I tend to play with them to the point where it annoys even me. Its also hard to use them discretely in a meeting.

Free Spinfuse Beta Loop Based Music Sequencer App
I know I asked myself what a “Loop Based Music Sequencer App” is so I will address that first. Spinfuse is a on device music sequencer, beat maker, and ringtone creator app which lets you create your own sounds for anything. I remember having a similar app on my Symbian phones way back in the day and I had some fun playing with Spinfuse.
The app lets you exchange sounds you create from your Spinfuse project and upload//download completed songs, loops, and ringtones. The app is going to have a web portal soon which is why there is a login for the app but that will come after the beta is completed.
If you wanted to have some fun creating MIDI like music on your BlackBerry check out the beta of Spinfuse at this link in their forums. You can download the app OTA at this link or for desktop installation at this link. The user guide for Spinfuse is available here. Its a pretty hefty app at over 1MB so watch out if you are on a limited data plan.

Giveaway: Smartsig 2.0.27 Win One Of 25 Copies
SmartSig v2.0.27 by Swift Raven Software allows you to place your custom signature on outgoing e-mails right where it belongs at the bottom of the body of your outgoing email. This will allow you to control your signature settings right from your BlackBerry device. The application is available for purchase at the Berryreview store for $2.99. One of the best features is the conditions that can be set to only place the signature in certain e-mails.
Description:
Tired of BlackBerry placing your email signature at the far bottom of your outgoing emails when the body of your message is at the top?
Then take control of your email signatures with the all new and more flexible SmartSig 2.0. Create your email signatures in SmartSig and define the conditions that must be met for your signature to be applied to an email. If an outgoing email matches a signature’s conditions then SmartSig will automatically place the signature directly below the body of your email message where it belongs. This is something the BlackBerry Internet Service can not even do properly. If you write and reply to business emails on your BlackBerry then let SmartSig make sure your important business email signature is correctly placed directly below your email message where it belongs.
Features:
- Create, edit, and delete email signatures directly on your device.
- Automatically places the correct email signature in the proper location within your outgoing email messages.
- Signatures can be conditionalized to only be applied to emails that have certain values for the To, CC, BCC, From, Subject or Message Body.
- Conditions can be combined for more complex, powerful and flexible signatures.
- Backup and restore your signatures using the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
- Enable and disable individual signatures.
- Support for all BlackBerry 4.5 and higher devices, including BlackBerry 5.0 and 6.0.
